Exclusive: How Dax Jean-Baptiste Creates Pure’s Perfect Sound
Welcome back to the Pure blog. In our behind-the-scenes series, we’re spotlighting the incredible people who bring your favourite audio products to life. Today, we’re introducing Dax Jean-Baptiste, our Lead Audio Design Engineer, whose expertise and passion shape the signature Pure sound you know and love.
Role and Dedication
As Lead Audio Design Engineer, Dax’s role spans the full product lifecycle—from early-stage concept work to production-ready solutions. His day might include defining acoustic targets for new projects, supporting customer service teams with technical queries, or troubleshooting complex system behaviour.
What defines a fulfilling day for Dax? “Those rare ones,” he says, “where we exceed original expectations without adding undue cost or complexity.” That sweet spot of performance and efficiency lies at the core of Pure’s design philosophy, and Dax ensures it’s achieved with every product.
Collaboration and Team Dynamics
Designing a Pure product is anything but a solo endeavour. Dax is part of a wider collaborative process that begins with the product team defining dimensions, appearance, functionality, and expected costs. From there, concepts are appraised by senior management before moving through engineering and design. This multi-departmental approach ensures that every product—from compact radios to versatile audio systems—feels unified, refined, and ready for real-world use.
For aspiring engineers, Dax’s advice is both insightful and grounded:
“Be confident. You’re here because you have something to contribute. Work hard—but not too hard. Burnout is real. Move quickly but keep good written records of both data and design thoughts. You’ll rely on them.”
He also urges young engineers to identify their preferred role—whether executing existing, understood design objectives or helping to define them—and to build a career path around that clarity.
Advice for New Team Members
Beyond engineering insights, Dax brings a human approach to team development. His message to newcomers?
“Confidence and curiosity matter just as much as technical skill. Take ownership of your work, keep learning, and support your teammates. This industry thrives on shared knowledge and mutual respect.”
Musical Favourites
Like any great sound designer, Dax has a keen ear—and an eclectic taste in music. Here are some of his all-time favourite tracks, both for personal enjoyment and evaluating audio systems:
- “Stimela (The Coal Train)” – Hugh Masekela
Atmospheric and dynamic — a go-to for testing presence and dynamic range. - “Sultans of Swing” – Dire Straits
A masterclass in clean guitar tone and storytelling. Brilliant production. - “Baker Street” – Gerry Rafferty
That iconic sax solo and rich studio sound — a true British classic. - “Wish You Were Here” – Pink Floyd
An acoustic intro full of depth; a reference track in any mixing room. - “Tempted” – Squeeze
Effortlessly catchy and impeccably produced—a timeless piece of British pop-soul.
Proud Moments and Favourite Products
With a career that predates even the founding of Pure, Dax has contributed to many landmark audio projects. One standout was the ZXR-750 surround speaker system, where Dax helped create a custom analogue network for an immersive home experience. Another milestone was the first-generation DigiTheatre DTS, a true “theatre-in-a-box” offering that delivered cinematic sound from a compact setup.
And when asked which Pure product every household should own? Dax doesn’t hesitate:
“An Evoke radio. Any model. They’re pleasant, unassuming design classics that function simply and reliably.”
How Dax Spends His Time Outside of Work
Outside of the lab, Dax is just as dedicated to his family and his passions. He’s a proud father to a sixteen-year-old daughter and an avid outdoorsman. Whether hiking, walking, or cycling, Dax finds balance in nature and endurance events, often riding for both pleasure and charity.
He also attends small-venue live music and theatre performances whenever possible. And in true engineer style, he designs and builds specialised bicycles for gravel riding and touring, an enjoyable contrast to his audio-focused day job.
“It’s a refreshing change from loudspeaker design and DSP tuning,” he says.
A Day in the Life at Pure
No two days are the same for Dax. From initial concepts through to mass production, he’s involved in defining purpose, refining features, and delivering meaningful experiences through sound.
A Joyful Listening Experience, Engineered to Perfection
His focus is always on creating “a joyful listening experience” within the practical constraints of product size, cost, and functionality. That means developing schematics, building acoustic mock-ups, testing transducers, and perfecting finishes—all while considering the emotional and practical side of sound.
And because signal integrity is crucial at Pure, Dax works with RF anechoic chambers and screened test environments to ensure our products meet the highest standards for noise, sensitivity, and range. It’s this commitment to detail that allows us to offer reliable, intuitive radios with beautifully simple operating principles.
Spending time with Dax offers a deeper understanding of what makes Pure, well… Pure. As one of the brilliant minds behind our sound, his passion is evident in every decision—from subtle design refinements to the pursuit of exceptional performance. He’s one of the many talented individuals who help shape not just our products, but the experience they bring into people’s lives.
